Hoping
to inspire the next generation of engineers, we are pleased to renew our
support of the Engineering Education Scheme (EES). Now something of an annual tradition, the
latest project saw Research and Design Engineers Robert Ng and Rajiv Banik work
closely with a group of pupils from Holyhead School in Birmingham.
Designed to provide students with an in-depth experience of science, engineering and technology to help them make informed decisions about their future studies and career, the EES links Year 12 pupils with local companies to examine real business problems. Working together to find feasible solutions, the pupils gain practical skills and insight while the participating companies benefit from fresh perspectives and new thinking on genuine commercial challenges.
This year, the team have been working on a project to remove rags from the rollforming process, by designing a system which will effectively lubricate the rolls whilst looking aesthetically pleasing. In December, Robert and Rajiv joined the pupils at the dedicated EES workshop at the University of Birmingham, where the group discussed the problem and built a model of the system. The pupils then had time to prepare for the assessment day, which took place in May and was judged by Robert and Rajivs colleague in R&D, Richard Tsang
Working with the students has been a really rewarding experience and its great that were able to contribute to the community in this way, says Robert. Were very happy with the progress made on the project; in fact were so pleased with the effort theyve put in that weve organised for three of the students to join us in the R&D team for additional work experience over the summer.
